Just metres from Bali’s south-west ‘sunset’ coastline, where mighty waves crash onto the glittering black volcanic-sand beach, farmers tend to luxuriant rice paddies and fishermen fix their colourful boats, Seseh Beach Villa offers an authentic Bali experience that’s hard to beat.

Four of the five ensuite bedrooms at Seseh Beach villa face the gardens, pool and ocean, and have either a terrace or balcony from which to enjoy your surroundings; the two upper floor rooms have particularly wonderful ocean views.  The fifth bedroom, a twin, is ideal for kids and has a private walled courtyard.  A furnished roof terrace bridges the two bedroom wings – ocean to the front and a peaceful garden area with ponds and stepped terraces that mimic the surrounding rice fields behind – making a lovely spot for breezy sea-view sundowners.  Back at ground level, the stylish living and dining room invites the outside in through teak-framed sliding glass doors that open to the garden where, at either end of the generously sized pool, is a thatched balé pavilion – one for alfresco dining and the other for relaxed evenings chatting over a glass of wine or watching a movie on the big flat-screen TV that’s cleverly installed behind a sliding carved screen.

Seseh Beach Villa’s knowledgeable and friendly manager heads up a lovely team of staff who will do all they can to make your stay comfortable.  The villa’s chef is a particular treasure, serving perfectly presented and fabulously fresh meals from an extensive suggestion menu of local and international choices (provisions are on guest account plus 20% handling fee which is subject to service charge and government tax).  Having a complimentary car and driver on hand makes light of the villa’s rural location; the bright lights of Seminyak and Canggu are less than half an hour away.

With its practical and pleasing symmetrical design, delightful garden, pool and plentiful living spaces, Seseh Beach Villa is both homely and exotic.  The villa’s size makes it as ideal for extended family holidays as it is for romantic tropical wedding parties.

Seseh Beach Villa lies at the edge of the small seaside village of Seseh, separated from the dramatic black-sand beach and roaring ocean only by a tiny road and a creeper-covered sandbank.  Along the beach road are a handful of other private villas and a walk through the village will take you past local homes, a couple of warungs (local cafes) and some basic local grocery stores.  A hundred metres along the beach is Seseh temple where fascinating ceremonies are regularly held. For shopping and nightlife, the villa’s driver is on hand to whisk guests to Seminyak, or to the ever-expanding restaurant scene in nearby Canggu, or to Tanah Lot, where the spectacular and much photographed Tanah Lot sea temple awaits.

About Seseh-Tanah Lot
A few kilometres north-west of Canggu, a towering banyan, sacred in many cultures, heralds the turning towards Seseh, a traditional beachside village approached via an avenue of coconut palms.

Seseh and its tiny neighbouring villages of Sogsogan and Cemagi still retain the customs and culture of old Bali. Here, you will see farmers in conical hats riding rusty old upright bicycles, as well as frequent, colourful processions leading to Seseh’s large beachside temple. You might just see a barong (a high-spirited, benevolent beast representing the power of good; danced by two men inside an ornate costume) dancing on the street. The good news, for folks who want to immerse themselves in the customs and culture of old Bali, is that the villagers encourage and welcome congenial visitors.

Although you can now find a few private rental villas in these three villages, they have seamlessly integrated without detracting from the simplicity and charm of the location. This is an ideal destination for those who want to get lost in the beauty of the countryside, and for those who want to engage with the local people and gain privileged insights into the Balinese Hindu lifestyle.

A little further up the coast is Tanah Lot, famous for its dramatic and venerated sea temple, which is perched on a craggy wave-lashed rock at the edge of the glistening black shoreline. It is probably the most photographed sight in Bali, especially in the late afternoon when its splendid profile is silhouetted against the setting sun. One of the top things to do in the Seseh-Tanah Lot area is to tee off at the 18-hole, 72-par, championship-standard Nirwana Bali Golf Club, frequently voted as the number one golf course in Asia. This, however, still remains a remote area with few facilities other than the souvenir stalls and simple eateries within the temple grounds, and three international restaurants within Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali Resort.

At Seseh Beach Villa, a thatched gateway opens to a pretty terraced garden, where wooden decking steps down to a goldfish pond and the villa’s main entrance. The villa’s rooms – almost all of which offer ocean views – are arranged in a symmetrical U-shape, with the living and dining room straddling two double-storey bedroom wings.  Earthy tones, Asian ceramics and artefacts, a massive solid wood table (seats 12) and two deep, comfortable sofas define the living and dining room. Copper kettle lamps hang over a bar counter at one end and a 70-inch TV screen set into display shelving at the other.

All five of the villa’s ensuite bedrooms offer fans and air-conditioning, super-comfortable beds, soothing green-toned soft furnishings, desk space, 40-inch satellite channel TVs, DVD players and iPod docks. On the ground floor, Pool Rooms 1 and 2 are furnished with king-size beds that convert to twins, have furnished terraces, dressing areas and bathrooms with twin vanities, indoor and outdoor rain showers and large freestanding bathtubs in walled gardens.

Above the Pool Rooms, similarly sized Ocean Rooms 1 and 2 offer four-poster king-size beds under lofty alang-alang thatched roofs. The ensuites here have even larger outdoor bathing areas; pebble floored, sunny and private. Balconies at the front of both Ocean Rooms look out over the gardens, pool and pounding surf.  Doors from both bathroom courtyards open onto the sunset terrace, furnished with all-weather rattan seating.

Tucked behind Ocean 2, the Garden Room is only very slightly smaller than the others. Although is lacks a view, this twin-bedded room does have a small furnished outdoor sitting area and an outdoor bathtub. Quiet and cosy, this is a good room for kids or grandparents.

Fire bowls, trickling water features and eight shaded sun loungers flank the 17x5m pool, which lies at the far side of the well-tended lawn. Book-ending the pool are fan-cooled balé pavilions – one housing comfortable rattan sofas arranged around a 60-inch TV (discreetly hidden behind carved teak screens), the other furnished with a 12-seater dining table for relaxed poolside meals. Two handy guest washrooms are tucked behind.  These balés transform into a DJ area and bar for weddings and parties – where up to 150 guests can enjoy dinner under the stars.
