The Experience
The Layar is a true tropical oasis. As your personal butler escorts you to your villa along the cobbled, plant-bordered lane, the hustle and bustle of Seminyak quickly fades away behind you, and by the time you’ve taken in the pretty garden with its inviting pool, and explored the superbly designed accommodation arranged tropical-open-air-style below dramatically sweeping ‘sails’ of roof, you’ll know you’re holiday.
The 23 villas at The Layar come in a range of sizes, from one to four bedrooms, to suit all types of guest, from couples and honeymooners to families and groups of friends holidaying together. Common to all villas, however, is polished and caring service and first-class in-villa dining provided by the strong staff team. All villas have their own equipped kitchens, but meals can also be ordered from an extensive priced menu of Western and Asian dishes (prepared in The Layar’s central kitchen) and daily breakfast is included in the villa rate – as is a complimentary 10-minute head and shoulder massage, WiFi internet, and exotic fruit basket and flowers in your villa. Sietto Cielo would also be a great option for an authentic Italian dining experience.
Fan cooled, open-sided living areas are convivially arranged across split levels under roofs which sweep from double-storey height down almost to the ground. Even when indoors there’s a keenly felt sense of tropical living. Air-conditioned bedrooms are spacious and very private and most have pretty garden bathrooms with oversize tubs in which to luxuriate.
The gardens and pools are a particular delight, with colourful trees and flowering shrubs totally screening each villa from the next and making it even harder to believe that you are only a five or ten-minute walk away from many of Seminyak’s best boutiques, restaurants and bars.

All that a luxurious romantic tropical hideaway should be.
The villas are well equipped with satellite channel TVs, sound systems and a good range of kitchen utensils (in the unlikely event that you might chose to self-cater), while bedrooms and bathrooms – all of which are generously sized – are fitted with quality furnishings and adorned with interesting Indonesian art and artefacts.
And there’s plenty to keep all ages and interests entertained. The gardens, furnished decks and pools, coupled with TV areas, lounge and dining spaces will be enough for some, but lazy days can be punctuated with in-villa spa treatments carried out by The Layar’s professional therapists and delicious barbecue dinners cooked in the gardens of your own private oasis. When we did finally tear ourselves away from our new ‘home’ we enjoyed venturing out to explore the shops, restaurants and cafes of Seminyak, all of which were easy to reach on foot. Cocktails on the beach at La Lucciola, followed by an excellent dinner at ‘The Junction’ made a great end to the day.

Highlights
The colourful and very private gardens at The Layar are a big highlight, as is the unique and tropical design of the villas. Having all this space and peace so close to the many delights of Seminyak was a treat.
Surprises
Admittedly, it was wet season during our visit, but the mosquitoes were a pest and we were thankful for the repellents and sprays provided at the villa. We thought that some of the living areas would benefit from more ceiling fans, but the roof design did keep the space well ventilated on the whole and the pool and jacuzzi were only a step away when we needed to cool down.
PROs
- Enviable central Seminyak location
- Colourful, mature gardens
- Masses of space – outside and in
- Five-star service
- Wonderful, homely feel
CONs
- Mosquitoes can be a pest
- No air-con in living areas

Location
Every villa at The Layar is set in a private and immaculately kept tropical garden bursting with colour and the sweet sound of native birdlife. Beyond the garden a private lane leads up to a road from which it’s only a five-to-ten-minute walk to either the fascinating arts and crafts shops lining Jalan Raya Kerobokan or the huge selection of restaurants and bars along Jalan Kayu Aya (also known as Eat Street). Another five minutes’ walk will bring you to the beach, where you can choose which of the many hip bars to stop at and watch another fine Bali sun set.

About Seminyak
North west of Bali’s international airport, coastal Seminyak is Bali’s established late-night party land, laying claim to the highest concentration of independent fine-dining restaurants and beach clubs on the island, including Ku Dé Ta, Potato Head, Cocoon, La Lucciola, Sarong, Métis and Sardine. Hip and happening Seminyak also boasts a plethora of chic cocktail bars, sumptuous spas, and fashionable boutiques.
A world-class playground for the rich, the famous and the bon vivants, the vibrant nightlife and luxurious accommodation in Seminyak draws a sophisticated crowd of ‘beautiful people’, especially Europeans. Seminyak Beach is the place where local and ex-pat communities gather every evening at sunset.
Seminyak is Bali’s have-it-all holiday destination for a relaxing beachside escape with easy access to the many tourist attractions around the island. Head south for Asia’s #1 water park, Waterbom, or hit the links at the scenic New Kuta Golf Club in the Bukit. North of Seminyak, enjoy the sporting facilities at Finns Recreation Club (for which some holiday villas in the area include guest membership), offering social and leisure amenities, including a state-of-the-art gym, a 25m swimming pool and a tennis and squash centre. For horse lovers, three riding stables are located at nearby Canggu – Kuda P, Tarukan, and Bali Equestrian Centre.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
Despite only having one bedroom, these four villas at The Layar certainly deserve their ‘villa’ title, and guests can expect a lot more than they might from the average hotel room. Each has a beautiful garden and good-sized private pool, a small but well-equipped kitchen, living and dining area, big bedroom and indulgent ensuite bathroom with huge outdoor tub, all spread out below the wings of a dramatically sloping ironwood-shingle roof.
The villa’s comfortable, fan-cooled living area is wonderfully spacious, offering semi-open-air living and easy flow between inside and out without the barriers of walls or doors. The earthy-tones of the soft furnishings soothe the senses and rustic Asian artefacts add interest. A large sofa faces the satellite TV, DVD player and music centre and a dining table for four sits on a raised wooden floor a step above, alongside the equipped kitchen.
Couples will love the large, light-filled, air-conditioned bedroom with its king-size bed, Flat-screen TV, stylish seating area, window onto the courtyard and sliding doors to the pool deck. In the elegant ensuite bathroom is a foliage-fringed, semi-outdoor rain shower and a twin vanity. A decadent black granite bathtub takes pride of place in the white-pebbled courtyard garden.
Outside, sun-loungers furnish the wooden deck, and a wide, shallow shelf in the curved 45sqm pool makes a cool place to lie back with a book.
