The Experience
Moorish, European and Asian elements are fused together at Azzalea, a sultry three-bedroom town house two minutes from the gentle beaches of Jimbaran Bay. Coloured chandeliers drip from the ceilings, engraved glass is mounted in panels on walls and delicate chiffon and satiny taffeta in dusky pinks and purples cloak beds, windows and cushions. French period furniture sits alongside weatherworn woods, looking very much at home in this soft, feminine, yet regal setting. The dusky tadelakt-coated walls are particularly striking; this Moorish form of lime plaster is the brainchild of owner Zohra Boukhari, a Belgium-born, Bali-based Moroccan interior designer.
Quite the most striking feature of this uniquely renovated house, aside from its dusky tadelakt walls, is its completely open-sided living and dining room that spills into the garden. An eye-catching floating staircase dominates the room, and whisks you magically up to a little snug on the first floor. Below this sits an oversized built-in sofa topped by a plethora of jewel-coloured cushions that sparkle under the gently whirring ceiling fans and coloured chandeliers. The stares of the Indian characters in Zohra’s husband’s photographs envy the villa’s plushness from their frames on the velveteen walls.
Encircling this homely den is a mature tropical garden bursting with colourful blooms and rich green palms. Within this lush setting is a crescent-shaped swimming pool that sits under the serene shade of a giant mango tree, its boughs heavy with ripening fruits. A romantic canopied day bed tops the lawn just a few footsteps from the ground floor master bedroom that opens widely onto the garden. Two twin (can convert to double) bedrooms are tucked to the back of the garden beside a freestanding kitchen.
Azzalea comes with a staff of three who cook breakfast for you every morning. The kitchen’s well equipped for self-caterers and the staff will shop on your behalf. Jimbaran’s famed seafood restaurants line the beach not more than 200m from the villa so you’ll have plenty of reason not to bother fixing your own supper. There are also a number of dining spots further south including the villa owner’s restaurant, Asam Garam, which serves up Mediterranean food in a similarly tropical-Moorish setting. A driver can come and pick you up for free or, you can order your food to be delivered to you at home.

“An exotic and romantic tropical beach hideaway for couples.”
A small staff team looked after the house, and friendly Made made us a lovely tropical breakfast each morning. He struggled a little with his English but since we only made simple requests this wasn’t a problem. Sister-property Villa Balquisse is up the road and this ten-bedroom hotel is the headquarters of all villa management operations so staff will come down to meet you and can easily be called upon if you have any specific requests – they are very helpful. There’s also the Mediterranean Asam Garam restaurant here (a driver can come and pick you up from the villa or deliver dishes to you) and, for a full pampering, the Henna Spa. Both are decorated in Zohra Boukhari’s iconic Moorish–Oriental style. If you’d like your taste buds pampering too, you can arrange for a private chef for just US$20 a day.

Highlights
There is a decent kitchen at the villa and since the staff will do all your shopping for you for free we felt that the villa represented good value. Also, since there are only one or two staff members during the day, we were left very much on our own which gave us the privacy we were looking for – couples will love it. Villa Azzalea is just a two-minute stroll to beautiful Jimbaran Bay and we enjoyed getting up early to watch the action unfolding on the beach. Sunsets from here are superb, and the best way to enjoy them is by feasting on seafood from one of the aromatic barbecue stalls lining the Kedonganan end of the beach.
Surprises
The villa is located in a residential area and therefore a certain degree of ambient noise is to be expected. The road outside the villa is a little busy and we could hear the sound of passing traffic quite clearly. The shower in the master bedrooms was great, but we had to run it for quite a long time before the hot water came. Perseverance is key!

Location
Villa Azzalea is located 100m from the beach in the village of Kedonganan at the northern end of Jimbaran Bay. Despite being close to the airport, guests will not be disturbed by the planes, although it’s entertaining to watch them from the beach. Jimbaran Bay is famed for its fresh fish. Every day, the fishermen return from the ocean in their gaily painted vessels to trade their marine harvest at the bustling Kedonganan fish market. Here, hundreds of kilos of snapper, barracuda, sardines, tuna and mackerel are sold to retailers and restaurants throughout the south of the island. What used to be a higgledy-piggledy arrangement of seafood eateries stretching from Kedonganan to Jimbaran has – in recent years – given way to a more orderly arrangement of buildings within designated areas. As the area has become more upmarket, the cafés at the Kedonganan end of the beach have been rebuilt and modernised. Scruffy plastic chairs and tables have been replaced with attractive teak wood furniture. Lit by flickering candles, the tables spill out on to the sand; the ambiance remains animated and social, yet it can also be enchanting and romantic, depending on the size of your party!

About Jimbaran
Jimbaran lies on the west coast of Bali’s narrow isthmus, a sweeping bay that curves for five kilometres from the southern side of the airport to the bushy headland that is the start of The Bukit peninsula.
Despite the handful of five-star developments in the area, Jimbaran Beach remains unspoilt and tranquil. The pace is still unhurried, the atmosphere relaxed and the sand soft and golden. Things to do in Jimbaran are defined by an unbroken coral reef which blocks the entrance to the bay, rendering the water safe for swimming.
During the daytime, it attracts guests from nearby resorts, together with the occasional windsurfer. In the late afternoons, Balinese families come down to the beach. Kids paddle in the shallows and build sandcastles that are more reminiscent of miniature Taj Mahals than of Norman fortresses. Ice cream pedlars cruise for custom on pushbikes, dogs gambol through the sand, young men play football with makeshift goalposts, and the delectable smell of grilled sweet corn blended with charcoal smoke emanates from food trolleys parked at the water’s edge.
The magnificent crescent bay is west facing, so at sunset the beach becomes the scene of a daily ritual as hundreds of visitors take ringside seats while enjoying the plethora of seafood available at local warungs, simple beachside cafes running along the length of the bay and serving up the catch of the day.
About Bali
Bali is Indonesia’s most popular tourist location and is considered one of Asia's premier tropical island destinations. Steeped in history and renowned for its artistic way of life, Bali is a peaceful contrast to some of the more frantic destinations Asia has to offer.
The inner peace and creative talents of the Balinese has attracted artists the world over fascinated by local dancers, silversmiths, wood carvers, potters and painters that seem to pervade throughout the island. The abundant verdant fields and surrounding sea have long supplied Bali with an easy surplus of food leaving time for life’s more artistic past times. As a result everything in Bali has a creative and religious element centred around the local Banjar (residents association) – little, adorned temples are everywhere, doors are covered in intricate carvings, huge kites ward off evil spirits and colourful roadside ceremonies bring traffic to a standstill.
Bali is a popular destination principally from Australia and Asia but also from all over Europe. The island welcomes thousands of visitors each year to a relaxing lifestyle, stunning beaches, world class surf, vibrant villages, and spectacular scenery all with an exquisite tropical climate. Located approximately two hours’ flying time from Singapore the island is serviced by an international airport at Denpasar with direct flights to and from many major cities in Asia, Europe and Australia and many more via Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital.
The island offers an impressive range of leisure and lifestyle amenities including world-class golf courses, wonderful seascapes for surfing, diving and snorkelling as well as luxurious spas, chic boutiques, tropical forests, towering volcanoes and international cuisine.
Rooms
From Villa Azzalea’s entrance gate, paving stones lead over the lawn and into the house. Here, you are greeted by a floating staircase that forms the centrepiece of the high-ceilinged, open-plan living and dining room. Soft grey velveteen walls punctuated by Indian photographs and a mosaic of mirrors provide a soothing backdrop to the room, as glass chandeliers – their stalks concealed within bunched fabric – hang festively from the ceiling. In the far corner, a wide built-in sofa topped with cushions sits before elegant reproduction French furniture and a formal dining table for six that extends prettily down a side terrace into the garden.
The striking timber staircase ascends to a cosy air conditioned snug equipped with flat-screen TV and DVD player, sofa, driftwood stools and large suspended lamps. Balcony doors open theatrically through a triangular alcove to overlook the garden and pool that lie below.
Just beyond the living room is the master bedroom; an expansive boudoir with king-sized bed, wardrobes and dressing table that opens through French windows onto the garden. Purple and black sheened chiffon drape the windows and a black glass chandelier drips gothically from the high ceiling. This room’s bathroom – just outside the entrance – comes with a shower and a freestanding terrazzo tub.
In a second building to the far side of the garden are two more bedrooms, both set up as twins (but with beds that can convert to king-size). These rooms, which are virtually identical, share a veranda and a blue-tiled bathroom with twin sinks and a shower. Beds are draped in rich fabric and furnishings include a wardrobe and peeled wood desks flanked by upholstered chairs. The plastered walls are stained a dusky powder blue.
A third building, next to the bedroom pavilion, houses a kitchen that’s well equipped for the western cook. An informal outdoor dining table that seats up to six, rests in the shade of a towering mango tree.
